Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, Cenero

Antiguamente esta iglesia era una abadía. Popularmente conocida como la abadía de San Juan de Cenero.

Dicho monumento se halla en el pueblo de Sotiello, a las afueras de Gijón.


De primitiva fábrica románica (año 1260), la iglesia fue sometida a ampliación en 1776 y restaurada en la posguerra tras padecer en 1936 un incendio que arruinó el inmueble, el Cristo de la Abadía, una Piedad románica, libros, actas y archivos.
Sus partes románicas son esencialmente el arco triunfal y la portada occidental, ambos con capiteles ornamentados. La monumental portada posee un arco polilobulado y está compuesta por tres arquivoltas –situadas sobre dicho arco–, de gruesas molduras y ornato ajedrezado, que soportan seis capiteles con decoración a base de animales y motivos fantásticos.



Entre la nave y la elevadísima cabecera se sitúa el arco de triunfo apuntado, donde se repiten los temas decorativos de la portada.

Su pórtico acoge distintos restos romanos de la parroquia de Cenero (tégulas, trozos de mosaico...).






Dentro de la iglesia se conserva el sepulcro (s. XVI) de los primeros abades, los Valdés de Trubia. La actual imagen del Cristo se debe a la restauración de Alfonso Álvarez Fernández, quien tenía taller en La Felguera.







En sus jardines podemos observar un gran tejo centenario popularmente conocido por muchos gijoneses.
